Recording Voice Overs for Broadcast While Traveling

August 30, 2026 by GenevieveBaer

Recording Pro VO While Traveling

It’s kind of scary, isn’t it? Or is that just me? We get very comfortable and confident in our home set-up and we know that we can rely on a high-quality, consistently great sound.

But life happens. And sometimes (not very often in my case) we have to leave our studios. I stalled for years before buckling down and getting my travel rig in place. I was nervous! I was worried that my sound would not be good enough and that I would not be able to relax if I brought my work with me.

Both concerns proved to be unfounded in most cases.

What I use for Voice Over when I travel

Well, my travel equipment has changed a bit over the past couple years. At first, I chose a smaller, shotgun style mic to take with me because it was compact, light, and the shotgun setup helps reduce any noise that isn’t directly in front of the mic.

I chose the Mic Hero DSP as my interface (highly recommend) and I bring my 13-inch Macbook pro with me that is a duplicate (content-wise) of my work computer.

Recently, however, I decided to start using a replica of the condenser mic I use at home. It’s heavier and more expensive but (this way) I am much closer to replicating my sound at home if I use the same mic. I have also begin experimenting with what I use to hold the mic–switching from the clamp-style mount to a desktop mic stand with a pop filter.

I also purchased a Travel-Booth-To-Go to take with me on trips where I either drive or I’m going away longer and checking a bag (the booth fits in a larger suitcase but not a carry-on).

Book a Trip? Book a Job.

There’s a running joke in the voice over world that the secret to booking voice over work is to book a trip away. There does seem like an uncanny truth to this.

A couple of weeks ago, I made the trip to Indiana to drop my oldest child off for his freshman year at Purdue University. I brought my travel rig along so I could tackle any important auditions or work.

Well, surprise surprise! I received a text Sunday night (!) that I had booked a political spot and the cliented wanted a few more reads of the :30 and a few reads of an additional :15 by the next morning!

Gulp.

The Finished Product

I had heard really good things about recording audio inside a car (a vehicle is already well-treated for sound) so I decided to experiment with that.

I drove our rental car to a quieter area (our hotel was next to a busy highway) and tried to find a good set-up. Two things were very challenging. It was night and it was DARK! The interior light would not stay on with the car off so it was very hard to see what I was doing!

Then? It started raining. Loudly.

I did manage to get decent takes and audio that night so I delivered the files and went to bed. The next night I tackled some more work and auditions but I decided to create a pillow fort in the hotel room. I found this a lot more comfortable.

Tip: Turn off the A/C, unplug the mini-fridge, and the suitcase holder works great as a structure!

Today, I located a copy of the :15 ad that I recorded in the car that first night and…It sounds pretty darn good! You would never know that I was twisted up in a rental car, sweating, and JUST a little close to tears when I recorded it.

Here it is:

Practice Makes Perfect-ish

I suspect that this will get easier and easier and I do it more often. Hearing the final product that went straight from my rental car to air is also pretty affirming that it IS possible.

In the meantime, I very much appreciate my comfy home studio with plenty of light and no rain.

Genevieve Baer is a 2026 Reed Award Winner!!!

April 7, 2026 by GenevieveBaer

The Reed Awards

I’m seriously behind on blog posts and have a lot of voice over news to catch up on. I figured I would start with the very exciting fact that I won a 2026 Reed Award for Best Voice Over in an Attack Ad Online Video!

My Political Commercial Entry

I was fortunate enough to voice a lot of political messaging last year but I one of those commercials stood out to me more than the rest.

I recorded an attack ad against Andrew Cuomo in early 2025 that just had the right combination of great script and direction. The production team had the same ideas as I did about the tone and so I was able to just “do my thing” with a script that was handing me all the cues.

The result (which you can see HERE) is a snarky, biting, and slightly humorous ad that stands out from the rest. Rather than taking an angry or sinister tone, the use of sarcasm elevated the message in a really effective way.

The Reed Award Ceremony

The Award Ceremony took place on March 12th in Charleston, SC. This event brings together campaign professionals from all over the country for a weekend of networking, learning, and celebrating. There were award categories for every aspect of political messaging–from best mailer to best ad on a shoestring budget, best TV ad, etc. The recognition of voice talent was a small (and very much appreciated) portion of the honors awarded here.

I considered attending this year but the event took place just one weekend before VO Atlanta which I had already committed to attending.

I had actually forgotten which night the awards were being given so it was a total shock to receive a text from a voice over colleague with a picture of my name up on the screen (below in all it’s blurry glory)

Using My Voice

I’m going to be frank here. I am absolutely mortified, disgusted, furious, and terrified about what the “President” and current administration has done and is still doing to our country.

I proudly believe in kindness, acceptance, body autonomy, LGBTQ rights, protecting our planet, science, medical research, strong gun laws, treating ALL humans (regardless of their country-of-birth) with care and kindness, and the list goes on and on. I have felt endlessly frustrated about lack of ability to DO anything to change things for the better.

But I am lucky.

Because I can use my actual voice to create some good. When I am voicing a political ad, it is coming from a place of passion and authenticity. I hope that my earnestness shines through.

I am honored to have been recognized for my voice over work in this way and I only hope that I continue to have the pleasure of using my voice-acting skills to promote political messages I believe in.

February 21, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Reed Award Nomination for Voice Over!

I am so delighted to announce that I have been named a Reed Award finalist for 2024!

I submitted work in the category for Best Political Attack Ad and was thrilled to learn that my submission received a nomination. The nominated commercial is political ad against Congresswoman Marionette Miller-Meeks (Iowa)–highlighting her extreme views on abortion rights.

Political Voice Over Work

I was lucky enough to do a lot of political voice over work in 2024. I absolutely love doing it. I thrive on the fast pace and the variety of deliveries the work calls for. I love the urgent nature of it. And I love the feeling that my voice over skills might actually be making a positive difference in our country.

Why this Particular Political Ad?

I chose this particular commercial because I felt like my voice over delivery struck the right balance of “real person” and authenticity while conveying the frustration and urgency at the same time. I’m so happy the judges agreed!

The Reed Awards and Conference

The Reed Awards is produced by Campaigns & Elections, the journal of the political campaign industry. “Founded in 1980, C&E is the go-to resource for political consultants, with its focus on the latest tools, tactics, techniques, technologies & strategies in campaigns.”

Branding itself as “The Political Campaign Industry Event of the Year” the event consists of two days of the very best political campaign professionals from across the world converging in one city for the Reed Awards & Conference. It’s an opportunity to connect, creat new relationships, dive into key issues affecting the industry, and celebrate the best campaign work from the preceding year.

Future Goals

I am unable to attend the ceremony this year as I have already committed to attending the VO Atlanta Conference happening on the same weekend. My goal is to continue to have my work recognized in years to come and attend The Reed Conference in the very near future!
