Female Voice Actor of the Year Nomination!

May 15, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Female Voice Actor of the Year Nomination!

I am shocked and delighted to say that I received a One Voice Nomination for Female Voice Actor of  the Year! This is a tremendous honor and I’m in the company of 9 other absolutely incredible female voice actors. Winners will be announced at the One Voice Awards ceremony in Dallas in August.

Voiceover Submission Process

Although the nomination came as a surprise, I was proud of the video I submitted on my own behalf. In order to enter this category, you need to create a compilation–no longer than 2 minutes long–of voiceover work you completed in 2024. When going through my own work, I was proud that I had so much to choose from and the variety within those choices. I was able to include TV commercial voiceovers, digital commercials, a sports promo I voiced for ESPN, some radio imaging I voiced for a CHR station, a TV affiliate news spot, and even my navigation voice for Waze.

You can view my entry submission HERE.

Voiceover Industry Encouragement

Even after 20 years as a professional voice actor, there are plenty of days where I get down on myself or feel insecure. Recognition like this means the world to me and I use it to lift myself up on the harder days and fuel my fire to learn and grow more.

I can’t wait to celebrate with my fellow nominees in August!

Five Things I gained from VO Atlanta 2025

March 30, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

VO Atlanta 2025

I’m back from second VO Atlanta (I’ve gone 2 years in a row) and once again, I am impressed by just how much I gained in those 3 days.

So much as been written about whether or not voice over conferences are “worth it”. For me? The answer is ABSOLUTELY!

Look, conferences are what you make of them. So, if you’re going to stay locked up in your room and not engage, then you’re not going to get anything out of them.

But if you put yourself out there, attend the sessions that are available, and simply involve yourself in conversations, it’s almost impossible not to come home with massive gains.

My Gains

I could go on for hours, so I’m going to limit myself to 5 incredible gifts of VO Atlanta 2025.

  1. Insight: I’ve been a voice actor for over 20 years now, and I am still learning about the inner workings of the business. For example, this year I learned more about the different opportunities that are afforded a voice actor who is on an elite LA/NY VO roster. I learned important information about the prolific Commercial voicecasting agency (Voicecasters) casting process. This info will affect how I audition for their projects in the future. And the list goes on and on. Not to mention, that the business is constantly changing…so just when you might think you have a full grasp on how it works? It evolves once again.
  2. Connections: Once again I walked away from the conference with a multitude of new business connections. From the direct email address of the fabulous Denise Patierno (in charge of VO casting for CNN promo department) to being added to the direct roster of a prevalent Casting Director, to learning the name of a large Automotive advertising company, I have not doubt that the connections I made this year will continue to serve me throughout my career.
  3. Relationships: This business can be a lonely one. We are working all day, by ourselves, in padded rooms. The value of connecting with others who completely understand what my daily life is like cannot be understated. It feels amazing to know that I have a pretty sizable group of voice actors that I feel comfortable reaching out to should I have a question or simply need commiseration. Mental health affects productivity (among many other things) and having trusted friends in the same business is a huge boost to my mental health.
  4. Perspective: Meeting all of these colleagues and learning all of this information in a short amount of time immediately adjusts my perspective on my career as a whole. I found that it was a reality check that was both positive and negative. On the plus side, I left inspired and the experience reaffirmed my belief that no dream is too big and nothing is really off limits as long as I keep working towards it. On the other hand, I was reminded that achievements often take many, many years, a whole lot of frustration, and the feeling that you are scratching and clawing your way to your dreams. I was also reminded about the fact that there are SO many wonderful, talented voice actors out there who are competing for the same jobs. Again, this is good and bad. On one hand, it’s a whole lot of competition making each job statistically unlikely. On the other hand, it’s a good reminder not to take it personally when I don’t land a job.
  5. Belonging: Finally, I left with a deeper sense that I am in the right place. I reaffirmed that fact that I love this business with all of my heart and I deeply enjoy the other people who are part of the voice over industry. It is creative industry full of funny, open-minded, generous, and warm people. I am so lucky to be a part of it and it is true gift to feel like I belong there.

One thing I do wish I had done was take more pictures! But I will include one that was sent to me from Saturday night (after a great dinner with Harry Dunn, Andy Barnett, Imari Williams, and Libby Clearfield).

I have no doubt that this will not be my last VO Atlanta conference. Until then, I return to y booth with renewed inspiration and a fuller heart. ♥️

New and old friends!

Voice Actor Genevieve Baer is a Reed Award Finalist!

February 21, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

I am so delighted to announce that I have been named a Reed Award finalist for 2024!

I submitted work in the category for Best Political Attack Ad and was thrilled to learn that my submission received a nomination. The nominated commercial is political ad against Congresswoman Marionette Miller-Meeks (Iowa)–highlighting her extreme views on abortion rights.

Best Political Attack Ad Nomination

You can watch my nominated political commercial HERE

Political Voice Over Work

I was lucky enough to do a lot of political voice over work in 2024. I absolutely love doing it. I thrive on the fast pace and the variety of deliveries the work calls for. I love the urgent nature of it. And I love the feeling that my voice over skills might actually be making a positive difference in our country.

Why this Particular Political Ad?

I chose this particular commercial because I felt like my voice over delivery struck the right balance of “real person” and authenticity while conveying the frustration and urgency at the same time. I’m so happy the judges agreed!

The Reed Awards and Conference

The Reed Awards is produced by Campaigns & Elections, the journal of the political campaign industry. “Founded in 1980, C&E is the go-to resource for political consultants, with its focus on the latest tools, tactics, techniques, technologies & strategies in campaigns.”

Branding itself as “The Political Campaign Industry Event of the Year” the event consists of two days of the very best political campaign professionals from across the world converging in one city for the Reed Awards & Conference. It’s an opportunity to connect, creat new relationships, dive into key issues affecting the industry, and celebrate the best campaign work from the preceding year.

Future Goals

I am unable to attend the ceremony this year as I have already committed to attending the VO Atlanta Conference happening on the same weekend. My goal is to continue to have my work recognized in years to come and attend The Reed Conference in the very near future!

Tips and Advice for Attending Voiceover Conferences

September 8, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Thinking about attending a Voiceover Conference?

From VOAtlanta to Vocation to OneVoice, SOVAS, MAVO…there are a lot of them out there! But…are they worth it? Should you go if you’re a total newbie? A long-time working pro? Well, there are a whole lot of opinions out there when you ask those questions. I happen to live by “to each his or her own” and I don’t think there is one right answer. But I did want to share my own unique perspective in case it helps someone get a more positive conference experience.

My First Voiceover Conference

In 2023–after almost 20 years as a working voice actor–I FINALLY attended my first voiceover conference. Why did it take me so long? Well, that’s a long answer for another day. 😜 All I can say is that I wish I had done it sooner. I got back from conference #3 less than a month ago. I have gained so much from each one…from valuable knowledge to blossoming friendships. 💕

Each time, I’ve gotten a little bit better about how best to approach these things without getting completely burnt out or overwhelmed. I thought I would pass along those tips for anyone thinking of attending their first conference in the future. So, without further ado…here is one random voice actor’s….

DO’s and DON’Ts of VOICEOVER CONFERENCES!

✅ Do: KNOW YOUR LIMITS –  These things are not for everyone–and that’s ok! There are plenty of other ways to learn and network. Find the ones that are right for you.

❌ Don’t: KNOCK IT UNTIL YOU TRY IT – Give it a try before you rule them out. I was shocked at just how much I got out of each one.

✅ Do: TREAT YOURSELF KINDLY – Speak positively to yourself and use that inner voice to build yourself up. That confidence will project outward and draw people to you.

❌Don’t: BEAT YOURSELF UP – I get it. I can be hard on myself too. But please remind yourself that we are all at different places in our journey and you are okay…wherever you are.

✅ Do: PROTECT YOUR VOICE – Conferences involve a whole lot of talking and often in loud settings. Take breaks, drink plenty of water, and take care of that “money-maker”!

❌Don’t: OVER SCHEDULE YOURSELF – While it’s important to take advantage of the learning opportunities offered, remember that down time (and time to connect with colleagues) is also crucial.

✅ Do: PACK SNACKS AND LAYERS – I learned this one the hard way. Conferences tend to take place in hotels–where the temperature varies wildly and the food is expensive!

❌ Don’t: BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR – I’m not saying that anyone is being purposely deceitful. What I mean is that, we all have our own perspectives but often tend to present them as if they are absolutes. Remember that it’s valuable to listen to many people’s thoughts and ideas and decide which ones resonate with you. There is no ONE way to go about this career.

✅ ❌ DO or DON’T: BRING A TRAVEL RIG: Speaking of doing what is right for you…this very much applies to the whole travel rig question. Many voice actors travel with them and many don’t. This is completely up to you and where you are in your career, whether you want to just be in “conference-mode”, etc.

Say Hello!

I hope these suggestions were helpful. If you have any questions, feel free to email me and I’d be happy to help. And if you DO see me at a conference, please come and say hello!

Voice Actor Genevieve Baer Wins 2024 One Voice Award!

August 14, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

And the Winner is…

Wow.

My head is still spinning from the amazing weekend at the One Voice conference and Awards Ceremony.  I was absolutely shocked to hear my name called as the winner for Best Political Demo! That room was full of the best of the best of this industry. As I said in my speech…just to be able to consider myself a colleague amongst these giants is so amazing. To be honored with an award is a complete dream come true.

Acceptance Speech

Everyone kept their speeches short and sweet–which was much appreciated as we had a ton of awards to get through! As you’ll hear in my own acceptance speech (which you can watch below), they played the first portion of my Democratic Political Demo as I walked up on stage. I am so happy that they did.  This spot (written and produced by J. Michael Collins) represents my belief systems in a nutshell and I believe that you can hear that in my delivery. I am so proud to have had that spot in particular represent me as I took the stage.  It’s wonderful timing to win an award for this particular genre…as we are obviously in an intense election year and Political advertising is exploding!  I have already had the honor to voice Political commercials promoting women’s right to choose. My hope is that I can do so much more to promote abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, gun control advocacy, and other policies and politicians that promote love and acceptance while protecting body autonomy and promoting equal rights.

My Acceptance Speech

One Voice

The One Voice Awards are the only voice-over awards that don’t charge an entry fee for submissions; as a result, they receive thousands of entries. We were told that for 2024, they received around 5000 entries that a group of 19 judges voted on (blindly to keep them objective).  Categories included best TV commercial, best radio commercial, best corporate narration, automotive spot, TV promo, animation, best voiceover demos in many of the genres, voice-over artists of the year, and more. The talent in that room was mind-blowing. These were artists at the very top of their game with careers that cover every genre and every high-profile voice-over gig one could possibly think of. It was so uplifting and inspiring to be surrounded and uplifted by this voiceover community. The skill and talent in the room was only surpassed by the support and goodwill of the community. It was the such an incredibly lovely and positive atmosphere.

The One Voice Conference

But of course the weekend was not only about the awards themselves. There was a plethora of VO industry panels, workshops, and other learning opportunities. I had the pleasure of attending small-group workshops hosted by Sumeet Iyengar of Cope Management and Arielle Negrin of Atlas Talent on commercial voiceover, movie trailer voiceovers, and promo vo. Both workshops were wonderful and filled with valuable nuggets of wisdom from VO industry pros. We all had a chance to step up to the mic multiple times, receive feedback, and improve our reads. Having attended similar workshops online and in person…I highly recommend attending in-person learning opportunities. While I learn from both formats, there is something about being in the same room that simply cannot be beat.

The Takeaway

It’s hard to sum up all of my feelings about this incredible honor and weekend in general. I will say this: it has not been easy forcing myself out of the comfort of my cozy recording booth and putting myself “out there”. But it has been oh so very worth it. Each conference and in-person networking event I have attended has fueled my knowledge and motivation in countless ways. The VO community is warm and joyful and I feel incredibly proud to belong to this amazing group of people. This award is the cherry on top of the this gift of a career that is beyond my wildest dreams.

Female Voice Talent Genevieve Baer is nominated for two One Voice Awards!

August 5, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

One Voice Awards 2024

This year was the first time I submitted for the One Voice Awards and I was extremely pleased to receive not one, but TWO nominations! The One Voice Awards are the only voiceover industry awards that do not charge an entry fee; as a result, they get far more entries than any other competition.

I had the honor of being nominated in the category of “Best Political Demo” and “Best Political Commercial Voiceover”. You can hear my demo HERE and the Commercial Spot I was nominated for HERE.  I am blown away by the recognition and honored to be listed amongst some of the best voice actors in the industry.

Awards Ceremony on August 10, 2024

The Awards will be presented in Dallas on Saturday evening 8/10/24 and will include a red carpet type photo op followed by a 3 course dinner and ceremony. I have been dreaming of  a little red carpet moment since I was a little girl and posted this picture on Linkedin as proof that I have been practicing for quite some time.  The fabulous Kay Bess will be the emcee for the evening.

One Voice Dallas Conference

But of course, One Voice is not just an awards ceremony. It’s also a fabulous conference for the voiceover industry with a ton of learning and network opportunities packed into the weekend.  I am really looking forward to connecting to so many of my VO colleagues as well as various casting directors, agents, and other industry experts. I have signed up for a few workshops led by casting director Elaine Clark, Sumeet Iyengar of Cope Management, and Arielle Negrin of Atlas Talent.

Each time I attend a workshop like this, I always walk away with priceless knowledge and insight into the business and new tactics and tools to apply to my reads.

My Goals

My intentions for the weekend are to simply soak it up, be as present as possible, connect with people I have not met before, gain new knowledge, and stay healthy! It’s a long list for two days for sure.

Once I have recovered from all of the fun, I will be sure to post a new blog detailing the weekend.  Check back soon for pictures and a recap of my experience!

Pro Voice Actor Genevieve Baer Provides New Navigation Voice for Waze!

June 12, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Drive with an NPC

Okay, I’ll admit it. My teenagers had to teach me what exactly an NPC is. 😂  HERE is a longer explanation from Wikipedia but–in short–it stands for “Non Playable Character”.  So any character in a video game that is controlled by the computer and not by a player would be an NPC.

Although I didn’t quite understand the term at first, I did understand the concept. After a great first audition and call-back, I was thrilled to be cast as the voice of the NPC for the Waze App.

Customize your Drive

Waze has a cool feature where you can “customize” your drive by choosing the character or voice who narrates your directions. These characters vary greatly in tone and mood and there are even some celebrities who have lent their voices (Christina Aguilera and Cody Rigsby to name a couple). My NPC character has a very calm, wise, and soothing tone while imbibing her directions with a bit of dry wit.  I got to work with Hyperbolic Audio for the first time and our session was a total blast.

Give it a Try!

Would like to give a try? It’s really simple. Download the Waze app on your phone. On the top left, click on those menu lines and go to “customize your drive”.  Scroll through the characters.  Right now the NPC character is located in the category of “Encouraging”.  I’ve already had people sending me messages telling me how much they’re enjoying it. My brother was a little wary of being “bossed around” by his little sister on his drives though.🤣😂

Thank you

If you do try it, do let me know what you think!  And many thanks as always to my fabulous agents at ASPVO for the opportunity!🚙🎙️🙏

A Spring in my Step

May 2, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

My Favorite Time of Year

Spring has always been my favorite season. I am giddy with all of the gorgeous flowering trees and bulbs and other blooms seemingly appearing overnight. I love the colors, the smells, and watching my dogs sunbathing on our deck. The creeks are flowing and our favorite hiking trails are green and lush. Each year, the sight of our gorgeous Eastern Redbud tree blooming in all of it’s glory takes my breath away.

Hope Springs Eternal

So what does any of this have to do with voice-acting?  Nothing. And everything!  It’s a chicken and egg situation but– just as there is new energy, growth, and hope in the air–those same things are appearing in my career right now as well.

It’s been a busy and incredibly fruitful couple of months for me with lots of wins and new and exciting projects. Right after I booked the campaign for UC Health Cancer Care, I booked and recorded a new navigation voice for Waze, a digital campaign for Pampers, and an upcoming session to record a couple national radio spots for a huge brand.

At the same time, Political voice-over season is in full swing and I’ve had the great pleasure of voicing quite a few spots in recent weeks. I really enjoy Political VO. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that my skills could potentially be helping to make a positive impact to the world.

Seasons Change

Here in Colorado, the saying is “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute” in reference to the fact that our weather varies an incredible amount from day to day..even hour to hour.

The same can be said for the voiceover industry. After 20 years in this business, you would think I’d be totally comfortable with the natural ebb and flow of things. Sometimes I am so busy that I don’t have time to eat and emerge from my booth at the end of the day like a groundhog being rudely forced from slumber. My voice and style seem to be right on trend and the bookings come fast and somewhat “easy”. Other times are far slower and the anxiety and doubts creep in.

Just as it feels like the gray winters will never ever end whilst in the midst of the winter months, I start to worry that the slower times will be my new normal.

And so the cycle continues year after year just like the changing seasons.

Enjoying the Moment

Is there a lesson in all of this? I think that my takeaway should be to continue to recognize the patterns in everything and strive to maintain my trust in myself and my skills through the ebb and flow. It would be wonderful if I could learn to recognize the successes and so-called failures equally and not put too much weight in either.

It’s a work in progress and most likely something I will be working towards my entire life.

In the meantime, I’m going to try and stop and smell the roses…literally. Because, despite the fact that seasons change, here we ARE in this beautiful one and I want to savor every drop of it.

Happy Spring and may your days be filled with vibrant color and hope.

UC Health Commercial Campaign

April 18, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Ready to Share

A couple months ago, I mentioned a very cool job in a blog post that I booked right before heading to the VOAtlanta Voiceover Conference.

I am finally able to share that the job was a commercial campaign for UC Health–specifically for their Cancer Care Center.

One of the spots was just released and I am so excited to share it here.

Standing Out in the Commercial World

There are so many TV commercials out there–we, as viewers, are inundated constantly; that is why I am particularly impressed with this campaign. I think they did such a tremendous job of creating an ad that is attention-getting, entertaining, informative, relatable, and touching.

The folks at the fabulous Coupe Studios were responsible for the stellar sound design and production. I have known this crew for many years and not only are the great people, but their work is just impressive time and time again.

Without Further Ado…

Here is the :30 spot in the campaign. I am honored to be the voice that drives home the final message.

New Network TV Promo VO Demo by Genevieve Baer Voice Actor

April 10, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

A New Demo for a New Year

One by one, I am tackling the goals that I set for myself at the beginning of 2024.  The first item on my list was to take new headshot and branding images.  Thanks to the fabulous Erin Cox of ELC Photography, that goal was reached in January.  ✅

My next item of business, was to create this very website from scratch.  I already had a voiceover website but I wanted to completely revamp it to reflect my entire skill-set and add a lot more information. I hired to Voice actor websites to help me with this task and I am thrilled with the outcome.  ✅

While my website was in the creation process, I began to tackle my 3rd big goal of the year: getting some one-on-one coaching in the art of network promo voiceover and then creating a fabulous promo demo.

Training with the Best

When it comes to promo coaching, Harry Dunn is one of the few names that is consistently recommended as a fantastic coach.  I chose to work with Harry for this reason and because he has so many years of valuable experience directly in the “trenches”.  Who better to teach me than someone who has spent the past 25 years producing network promos and coaching voiceover talent through their deliveries?

I love coaching with Harry. He’s kind but straightforward. He’s professional and fun at the same time. And he has a deep knowledge of the industry that he readily imparts to his students.

After a couple months of one-on-one coaching, I was ready to make a demo! 🎉

My New Promo Demo

Recording my Promo demo was super fun! Harry hires the fabulous Danny Brin (a post production audio mixer at The CW Television Network) to create custom music beds and do all the recording and mixing. Harry’s direction is clear and decisive and I felt confidant in the reads I was delivering. Best of all, the turn-around time for receiving my fully produced demo was super fast! ⚡️

TAKE A LISTEN!

So, without further ado, here is the fabulous demo we created. Take a listen and let me know your thoughts.  😊 I am so excited to get this out into the world. I hope to catch the ears of network promo producers as well as the top-tier talent agencies who tend to receive the bulk of auditions. 🤞

Radio Imaging Voice Talent Genevieve Baer: Behind the Mic Interview

April 1, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Behind the Mic Interview

Last year I had the pleasure of being interviewed for Benztown’s “Behind the Mic” feature.  It was great fun and you can read the entire interview HERE.

I’m so proud to say that I’ve added a few more stations to my name since that interview came out (WQKX and Q105) and am currently being considered for quite a few others.

I also wanted to highlight a few more points I made in the article.

IZOTOPE RX DECLICKER

If you’re a voice actor and you haven’t yet discovered the RX Declicker plug-in, you can find it here. I honestly don’t know any voice actors that don’t use it!  Our mics are designed to be uber sensitive–which is necessary and great!  But that also means they pick up every little noise our mouths make.  Removing little clicks can be so tedious and this plug-in does the majority of the work for you–without compromising the audio.

HIRE OTHER PROS

Unless you’re a super skilled audio engineer, I highly recommend hiring a pro to help you implement the best settings for the Izotope Declicker and any other plug-ins…and while you’re at it, have them review and tweak your recording environment and overall sound. I personally hired the “Audio Ninja” himself,  Jordan Reynolds do this for me and I am so happy I did!  He saved me so much time and headaches trying to do it myself, he made my audio sound absolutely fantastic, he gave me the confidence that I was submitting a stellar-sounding product, and he was just a pleasure to work with.  The point is: don’t ever think you have to do everything yourself. Reach out to professionals who are ready and willing to help. It is SO worth it.

MY TALENT CRUSH

And finally, I mention my admiration for my secret “best friend” Amy Poehler.  I don’t know what made me first enamored with her, but I do know that her “Rick” skits on SNL absolutely sealed the deal. Do yourself a favor and watch THIS if  you haven’t seen them. I think she’s a comedic genius.

Radio Imaging Voiceover work for March by Genevieve Baer, Voice Actor

March 27, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Radio Imaging for WQKX

This year, I was thrilled to be chosen as the female imaging voice for 94KX – a Pop station based out of Sunbury-Selinsgrove-Lewisburg, PA.  I try to share my work regularly on Linkedin and as I was posting this morning (which you can read here) it occured to me that I should share on this fancy shmancy blog as well.

A NEW GENRE

I stumbled into radio imaging about 4 years ago almost by accident. A client of mine asked if I was interested in getting into it. As someone who is always interested in exploring other genres of voiceover, of course I said YES! Suffice it to say, I fell in LOVE 🥰. I can’t believe it took me this long into my career to discover this genre as my particular skill-set is so perfectly suited for it!

LEARNING AND MARKETING

I never do things half-way!  I threw myself into learning as much as possible, creating fantastic demos (thank you Jay Helmus of Zippy Zappy Productions) and marketing those demos like crazy.  Along the way, I was lucky enough to be signed to the Radio Imaging and TV Affiliate department at CESD and then brought on to the fabulous roster at Benztown. Things really started to take off from there and I feel like I am truly where I am supposed to be.  I now have a handful of stations that I voice for and am quickly gaining interest and traction. 🎉

WHEN WORK FEELS LIKE PLAY

Why is this all so exciting for me? Look, I can’t say enough about how much I love being a voice actor. Every single voiceover job is a gift to me (ooh that kind of ties in to my branding doesn’t it? 🎁 ) but I am just having the time of my life with radio imaging and I’m a greedy little bugger–I want MORE!  I spent many years training in Musical Theatre (thank you Syracuse University) and then performing on stages around the country. Radio Imaging allows me to access many of the skills I honed during those years:  improvisation, character work, and even my sense of rhythm and tone. All of these skills allow me to offer a bit extra to stations looking to switch things up.

I get excited each time a radio imaging page to record lands in my inbox…and I don’t see that excitement dissipating any time soon. Below is a compilation of some of my work for WQKX for March–check it out!

VO Atlanta: The Good, The Bad, and The Olives

MY FIRST VO ATLANTA EXPERIENCE

It’s been one week since I arrived home from attending my very first VO Atlanta. That’s right–although I have been lucky enough to have been in this industry for 20 years, I had not yet attended the biggest voiceover conference in the world…until this year.

There are countless blog posts and articles about whether or not voice over conferences are “worth it”. I find those kind of silly. We as a society tend to reduce everything to black-and-white terms when those absolute terms are rarely accurate. Most everything in life falls into the in-between…those subtle shades of gray that live in the middle of black and white.

WORTH IT (For Me)!

Am I glad I attended this year? That would be a resounding YES!  Was it worth if FOR ME?  Absolutely.  J. Michael Collins and his wife Anna Alcasis-Collins did a tremendous job of putting the conference together. I cannot imagine the amount of details and stress that is involved in planning this thing. They are clearly adept and experienced at putting something on this scale together. They also recognize the value and necessity of delegating, and their support staff did a truly fantastic job of keeping the show running smoothly.  If there were glitches, I was completely unaware of them.

Kicking it off with a Booking!

My conference experience started out with a last minute flight change.  As luck would have it, I booked a fantastic commercial job right before the conference through my agents at Go Voices. These clients wanted to record at the fantastic Coupe Studios on Thursday morning…right when my Southwest flight was supposed to take off. Kudos to Southwest for making if FREE and EASY to push my flight back. I avoid calling any sort of customer service line like the plague. With Southwest, no phone call was necessary. It literally took me 2 minutes to go on line, search for alternate flights, and re-book to a later one. Hallelujah! That last minute booking was a huge blessing…as it just gave me a welcome confidence boost from the start.

So the conference itself was extremely well organized and the offerings were vast. As far as I was concerned, the rest of the experience was entirely up to me! I had vowed to take full advantage of it–and so I did!

Connecting in Person

One of my biggest goals was to finally connect IN PERSON to many of the wonderful agents, managers, production houses, and coaches that I have been working with for months or even years.  This voiceover industry can be somewhat isolating. It’s fabulous that I can work from home in my Whisper Room, but there is just no substitution for connecting face-to-face. And that I did.

Highlights

A few of the many highlights were getting to meet my dear agent Suzanne Spaziani of ASP, all the awesome ladies at the VO Chateau by Celia Siegel Management, the wonderful guys at Pandora/Studio Resonate, Zach Hahn of Audio Expert, Mary Lynn Wissner of Voices Voicecasting who produced my most recent commercial demo, and even the team at Voice Actor Websites who helped me create this very website. I even got to reconnect with a dear friend, Vikas Adam (a widely acclaimed audiobook narrator) from my college days at Syracuse University, whom I had not seen in 26 years!

Learning Opportunities

And then there was the learning. I had jumped on the chance to sign up for special “X-Sessions” with Thom Pinto on “In Show Narration” and Harry Dunn for “Network Promo“.  Both of these sessions were wildly fun and informative. I am in love with both genres and am making demos for both styles in the next few months. Getting the opportunity to have an intense learning session with these masters–along with about 10 of my excellent peers– was absolutely fabulous.

A Word of Warning

I’ve covered a lot of the “good”…but I also mention the “bad” and the “olives” in my title so I guess I should explain them.

Conferences can be expensive and draining. It’s a LOT of stimulation. I did not get even close to enough sleep and I was utterly and completely exhausted when I got home. I had somewhat been mentally prepared for that but it’s not for everyone. Like many people, I have multiple facets of my personality. I vowed to access my out-going and “sparkly” side at this conference and talk to as many people as possible. And I did just that. But my throat was TIRED and it took me a solid week to feel human again in the sleep-department.

And conferences are not cheap. The X-sessions I attended were an additional cost. They were worth it–but not cheap.  And the drinks at the Hilton Atlanta Airport Hotel bar were, um, a BIT steep.  My go-to drink is a Dirty Martini (finally, she explains the olives!) and those came in at a whopping $20 each before tip!  The drinks were well made and I am fortunately a bit of a light-weight when it comes to alcohol so I didn’t need too many to get that nice buzz going…but still, if you’re calculating by olive at 3 olives per drink, that comes out to almost $7 per olive. 🍸

The Takeaway

So there you have it. I am so grateful to have met so many fantastic people in person and to bask in the glow of what is truly a warm, lovely, generous, and dynamic group of people. I am proud to be a part of the Voiceover Industry. I am happy to say that I left the conference feeling like I truly belonged. And what a gift that was.

There’s No Place Like Home

And finally, one of the very best things about attending any sort large conference like this?  The warmth and relief of returning HOME. ♥️

Pip, Squeak, Elphaba, and Phoebe letting me know just how much they had missed me.
