My Year in Voice Over!

January 9, 2026 by GenevieveBaer

This Year in Voice-Acting

It was another really great year doing a job that I absolutely love. Even after 20 years, it still blows my mind that I get to make a living doing voice over. My passion and love for it has only grown with time and each year I unlock new things to learn and new genres to tackle.

Adding Animation to my Toolbox

One of my goals for this year was to create an animation demo. I had been seeing more and more animation auditions land in my inbox and was having an absolute blast tackling that material.

Not only did I create my first animation demo (with the fantastic Kristin Paiva) but I booked my first TWO animation jobs!

Connecting to Voice Over Industry Professionals

Another goal I had set for myself in 2025 was to make an effort to meet and train with more industry pros. I took a multitude of fantastic workshops with casting directors, voice directors, agents, and other industry giants. Not only did I learn a ton of valuable information but I also just got myself “on the radar” with so many voice over folks that make the decisions.

I learned that introducing myself and demonstrating to casting professionals that–not only does my voice over demo sound great–but I can actually take direction and deliver in a live session, makes a huge difference. After all, casting directors are putting their careers on the line when they recommend voice actors for gigs. It’s so important that they feel confidant that the voice talent can take direction, will be easy to work with, and can deliver the goods in the session.

Reel of my Voice Over work in 2025

I sent out an end-of-year newsletter to many of my voice over contacts this year. I wanted to include a reel of some of my work from this past year so I created one and capped it at 3 minutes max.

It was a really useful exercise for me because I tend to brush off my so-called “wins” and focus more on the jobs I didn’t get (a terrible habit).

But going through my work form 2025 forced me to acknowledge that a) I had a lot of work to choose from, and b) this work was extremely varied and covered pretty much every possible genre of voice-acting.

I allowed myself to feel proud of that fact–at least for a few moments 😉

Below is the video of just a small handful of the voice over gigs I had the pleasure of voicing this year.

Voice-acting Goals for 2026

I can only hope that I have an equally large and varied amount of work to look back on this next year.

In 2026 I want to continue my mission of networking and introducing myself and my work to more folks in the industry. I would also like to do a better job of maintaining confidence and self-belief in the face of WHATEVER happens in my career this year. There are so many factors at play, but my value as a voice talent should never be in question.

I will focus on the things I can control: continued training, top-level service, a great attitude, self-marking, etc. and try and leave the rest to fate.

Happy New Year everyone. May it be happy, healthy, and rewarding for you all!

Voice Actor Genevieve Baer is the Announcer for Regions Bank for a Second Year

December 10, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Announcer Voice Over for Regions Bank

I am have had the pleasure of voicing the various TV and Radio commercial campaigns for Regions Bank all throughout 2025.

I auditioned and booked this voice over gig in January of 2025 and was booked at various points throughout the year to voice additional spots.

Regions tag line is “Extra is our Ordinary at Regions” and my voice over delivery is meant to convey confidence, warmth, and trustworthiness.

It’s been an absolute pleasure working with the creative team this past year.

Another Year with Regions Bank

That said, I’m so pleased to announce that Regions had renewed all of the spots I voiced for them this past year through 2026!

This is almost more meaningful than booking the original gig as it’s a huge vote of confidence from the the folks at Regions that they like working with me and like what I deliver.

Below is just one of the many TV commercial spots I voiced for them this year:

Genevieve Baer is “Baby Chloe” in Scribble Scrubbies!

November 14, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Booking a Role in Crayola’s Scribble Scrubbies

This summer I found myself in a really funny and bizarre trend of booking the voice of various dogs. In the span of a month, I booked–not just one–but THREE different voice over gigs where I was hired to provide the voice for a dog!

Two of those projects were commercial campaigns but the third one was for the adorable Youtube series: Scribble Scrubbies.

Scribble Scrubbies Pets by Crayola

Full disclosure: I had never heard of Scribble Scrubbies before I received an audition. My children are older and so I have been unaware of many of the popular kids’ series out there. Of course, I went straight to Youtube to do my research before auditioning.

I learned that Scribble Scrubbies is a wildly entertaining and adorable series that ties into a super cute toy made by Crayola.

In each episode, the characters go on adventures and there will be a cut to real children playing with the toys throughout the episode.

Brand New Scribble Scrubbies Characters!

Baby Chloe is a new character (and a NEW TOY) and this was to be her very first episode (titled “Babysitting: But the Floor is Lava!“).

In the episode, Baby Chloe and 2 of her friends play hide-and-seek and dream up all sorts of imaginary scenarios to make the game even more fun.

Recording the episode was a total blast AND there is a chance that these characters could make a reappearance in future episodes! 🤞

More Scribble Scrubbies to Come!

In animation voice over, there is usually quite a bit of a wait from when you record the animation voice over to when the episode is actually released (because they still need to animate it!).

I am thrilled to announce that I will be voicing yet another character in Scribble Scrubbies in a soon-to-be-released episode. Stay tuned for “Mirabelle” the Cow! 🐄

Meet Baby Chloe

Below is a shortened version of Baby Chloe’s Scribble Scrubbies episode. You can view the entire episode (and so many more) on the Scribble Scrubbies Pets Youtube Channel.

Genevieve Baer Provides the Bold, Sultry, Announcer Voice Over for Wingers!

October 14, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

A New Food Voice Over Campaign

I love food. I love eating. I love going out to eat with friends and family. And I really love voicing food and restaurant spots!

So I was overjoyed when I was asked to be the Announcer Voice for Wingers Restaurant and Alehouse!

This gig came to me via a recommendation from previous clients of mine–which is always the best. Not only did I not need to audition for it, but it means that those previous clients think highly of me and my work.

An Evolving Brand

I have been voicing the TV, Radio, and Digital campaigns for Wingers all year now and the sound and tone of the spots have evolved over time.

At first, I was directed to provide a voice over that sounded upbeat, excited, and inviting.

Over time, the tone and message have become more sultry, gritty, edgy, and sexy.

I love this new direction as I believe that it helps convey the indulgence and deliciousness of the food as well as stand out from the slew of other restaurant advertisements.

The Latest Wingers Restaurant and Alehouse Commercial

Below is one of the latest spots I recorded.

I love the rocker edge to the VO, the music, and the imagery.

Dare I say, this is the CHEESIEST commercial voice over I’ve ever recorded??? 😜 🧀

Adding Animation Voice Over to my Tool Belt!

September 15, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Voice Acting for Animation

I had lunch with a dear friend and fellow voice actor last Spring and she asked me what my goals were for the coming year.

The very first thing that popped into my head was “create an Animation Voice Over demo“.

When I first began my career as a voice actor, Animation was not really a field that was accessible to voice actors who did not live in either New York or LA. Slowly that began to change. In the last few years, I began to see more and more auditions for Animated series, movies, and shorts.

Taking the First Step

The first thing I needed to do was make sure that my skills were up to par and my auditions were competitive.

I decided to call on one of the best in the business when it comes to Animation: Kristin Paiva.

Kristin is a highly respected Casting Director, Voice Director, and VO Coach with over 2 decades of experience in the animation world. She is also a wonderful human being.

Our coaching session went even better than I had expected and, by the end of the hour, we had plans to create an Animation demo together!

Animation Demo Creation

I have recorded a lot of demos in my 20+ years as a voice actor. However, the process of creating an animation demo was by far the most difficult and the most fun!

Kristin brings on a team that includes custom script writing and expert production. The scripts were written with my specific skills and sensibility in mind and serve as more of an outline for our session–which was filled with improv, experimentation, and play!

In the end, we spent about 5 hours recording a plethora of options. I have never been more exhausted, more sweaty, or more exhilarated after a demo creation session.

The Completed Animation Voice Over Demo

I could not be more happy with the final product. My animation demo is extremely varied, entertaining, and representative of who I am as a voice actor.

I am proud to use it as a “calling card” to market to various creators and production houses, and agents.

Voice Over Representation for Animation

With my shiny new demo in hand, I was able to target an agent with a long history and great connections in the animation world.

I am thrilled to announce that I have been added to Micaela Hicks’ roster at Eris Talent Agency! Micaela is fantastic and I have already had the opportunity to audition for some really exciting projects.

Stay Tuned…

Even before my Animation Demo was complete, the universe sent me a sign that I was on the right path.

I booked not one–but two different roles in an animated series that will be released in the very near future. Stay tuned for a future post introducing those fun characters.

I am thrilled for this new chapter in my Voice Over career. I love the endless opportunities for expansion and growth in the Voice Over world and can’t wait to find out what’s next.

Take a Listen!

Without further ado, here is my new Animation Demo. I am so grateful to Kristin Paiva and her team for working so hard on this and I hope you love it as much as I do!

Singing for Kids’ Media

July 31, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Providing Vocals for Children’s Music

A recent post on Linkedin led me down a new career path that happens to fit me like a glove!

As a trained singer with a background in Musical Theatre and Children’s Theatre, I have always relished the opportunity to sing for the occasional voice over job.  A couple weeks ago, I happened to see a last-minute, urgent casting on Linkedin searching for a female adult singer for a kid’s music video and jumped at the chance to audition.

After connecting with the composer (who was also casting the project), I learned she would soon be teaching a workshop on auditioning for Kids’ media. I signed up right away–eager to learn if I was giving myself the best chance to score the job by using the proper protocol.

Submitting Vocal Auditions for Kids’ Media

I learned so much from the workshop including including the following:

  • The proper way to record vocals and the proper format to submit
  • What composers and casting directors need in an audition that makes your audition viable
  • How to adjust my vocals to best serve music for children
  • Where to search for this type of work
  • How and where to make a demo to use as my “calling card” for the Kids’ Media Genre

Children’s  Music is a Whole New World

One of the most eye-opening revelations from the workshop was that this type of work does NOT come through voiceover agents or the voiceover world in general. In fact, I was told that most singers are cast directly through various rosters and agents are really not part of the equation. 🤯

I do get the occasional audition from my agents that requires singing (and I get SO excited when they come around) but I have always wondered how the vast majority is cast.

I also learned just how much work is out there on channel after channel on Youtube that my voice and skill-set would be perfect for.

Creating a Singing Demo for Kids’ Media

Honestly, I didn’t even wait for the workshop to be over before I emailed the woman teaching it to ask her to help me create a demo. I was so impressed with her career and knowledge as well as the previous demos she had created and I couldn’t wait to get started.

We met on zoom before hand to discuss my vocal range and interests and the process raced on from there. I had an absolute blast recording lead, harmony, and vocals on original songs tailored to me. I found the whole process exhilarating.

I am absolutely thrilled with how my vocal demo came out and am so excited to pursue more work in the Children’s Entertainment area.

Take a Listen!

Here is my shiny new Kids’ Media Vocal demo. I hope to be announcing tons of fun singing projects in the future! 🎤 🎶

A Travel Rig for a Professional Voice Actor

June 10, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Providing High-quality Voiceovers while away from The Home Studio

Ask a dozen different voiceover artists about travel rigs and you’ll get a dozen different opinions. From what exactly is the best set-up to whether to travel with one at all, there are so many differing opinions out there.

And like most things in life: there really is no “right answer”. It’s all about what works for you.

Twenty Years in the Making

It only took me about 20 years to start traveling with voiceover equipment! I really do not travel very often so, for a long time, I felt strongly about being able to actually take a few days away from work and be more present with my travelling companions.

However, my career as continued to grow and the need to have a way to serve my clients or submit important auditions became more and more evident.

An Unusual Result

To my surprise, I have found that–by bringing a voice over set-up with me on the road–it’s actually allowed me to be more present and relaxed. Knowing that I have equipment should I need it has released me from my guilt of being away from the studio.  I have found myself more relaxed and free from the resentment of “missing out”.

The “Best” Voice over Travel Rig

Again, there is no “right” opinion on the best equipment to bring and a thousand different variables that affect that answer. Questions like:

  • how are you travelling (by car, plane, etc)?
  • how much luggage are you taking?
  • Where will you be staying and what is the environment like?
  • Are you planning on recording voice over jobs with this rig or auditions only?

All of these questions are important to ask yourself before you decide what set-up to bring.

My Personal Voice over Travel Rig

I wanted something that could easily fit in a carry-on bag (I am allergic to checking bags at airports) and I planned to use it mostly for auditions. The microphone I use in my home studio is quite heavy and very sensitive so, for these reasons, I chose to go with a light shot-gun mic (the Synco D2) for my travel set-up. I paired that with the amazing Audio Sigma MicHero DSP audio interface (highly recommend). Then a pair of headphones and my laptop complete the set-up.

Be Honest and Transparent with Your Voice over Clients

No matter whether I am turning auditions in to my agents or recording an actual voice over job, I am always honest about being away from home and using my travel gear. I would never want to be caught in the position of booking a VO job and then having the client disappointed in the sound. For auditions, I want to be sure and point out that I am using my travel gear so that the potential client knows that this is not the sound of my wonderful home studio.

Already Paying Off in a Big Way

Choosing to travel with my voiceover gear has been the right move for me, and it’s paid off…big time! On a recent trip to Seattle, I received a last-minute email from a client asking me to record several political voice over commercial spots. The audio engineer and the client both felt comfortable with me using my travel equipment and we ended up recording seven spots…which went a long way towards paying for our trip!

My son took the picture of me below looking oh so glamorous during the session.

Ah the glamorous life of a voice actor!

Telly Award Winner for Best Commercial Voice over!

May 22, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Telly Award for Best Commercial Voiceover awarded to voice actor Genevieve Baer!

On Tuesday morning I woke up to an exciting email in my inbox informing me that I had won a Telly Award!

The Telly Awards are a prestigious international awards program that happen every year and honor the best in Television and Video creative across all screens. They also happen to have a craft category that considers the voiceover only of the piece.

It was my first time entering and I decided to submit one of the Television commercials I voiced for US Steel. This piece, in particular, allowed me to access the textured, gritty, and authoritative part of my voice. Grounded and powerful, the voice over delivers the message without overpowering the visuals on the screen.

You can see and hear the spot HERE.

A Win in More Ways than One

One of the things that made this commercial campaign extremely gratifying was that it was never meant to be voiced by a woman at all. Considering the subject matter (the steel industry), the creatives assumed they would go with a booming male voice. They did open up the auditions to both men and women though.

And my audition changed their minds.

Power, Grit, and Authority comes in all forms

Rather than try and compete with a big, booming male voice. I decided to access my grounded authority by going in the opposite direction. After all, when a person knows their subject matter deeply and speaks with authority, they don’t really need to shout about it.

I’m so glad the creatives agreed and the result was a truly powerful and effective campaign.

A New Era for Voice over

This textured and gritty side of my vocal range has been popular lately. As creatives are beginning to recognize the strength in women’s voices more and more, there have been more and more opportunities and requests for me to deliver in this powerful tone. It’s a such a fun area to play in.

It feels authentic to who I am and just the act of allowing my voice to sit in that lower and textured end of my range, immediately grounds me to the copy and intention of the piece.

Grateful for Great Creatives

I owe endless thanks to my voice over agents at ASPVO along with the Morgan Young (writer and director) and Julie Mays and the team at IMG for production. I am so grateful for their vision and the opportunity to be a part of it!

Female Voice Actor of the Year Nomination!

May 15, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Female Voice Actor of the Year Nomination!

I am shocked and delighted to say that I received a One Voice Nomination for Female Voice Actor of  the Year! This is a tremendous honor and I’m in the company of 9 other absolutely incredible female voice actors. Winners will be announced at the One Voice Awards ceremony in Dallas in August.

Voiceover Submission Process

Although the nomination came as a surprise, I was proud of the video I submitted on my own behalf. In order to enter this category, you need to create a compilation–no longer than 2 minutes long–of voiceover work you completed in 2024. When going through my own work, I was proud that I had so much to choose from and the variety within those choices.

I was able to include TV commercial voiceovers, digital commercials, a sports promo I voiced for ESPN, some radio imaging I voiced for a CHR station, a TV affiliate news spot, and even my navigation voice for Waze.

You can view my entry submission HERE.

Voiceover Industry Encouragement

Even after 20 years as a professional voice actor, there are plenty of days where I get down on myself or feel insecure. Recognition like this means the world to me and I use it to lift myself up on the harder days and fuel my fire to learn and grow more.

I can’t wait to celebrate with my fellow nominees in August!

A Voice Actor’s Lessons from VO Atlanta 2025

March 30, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

VO Atlanta 2025

I’m back from second VO Atlanta (I’ve gone 2 years in a row) and once again, I am impressed by just how much I gained in those 3 days.

So much as been written about whether or not voice over conferences are “worth it”. For me? The answer is ABSOLUTELY!

Look, conferences are what you make of them. So, if you’re going to stay locked up in your room and not engage, then you’re not going to get anything out of them.

But if you put yourself out there, attend the sessions that are available, and simply involve yourself in conversations, it’s almost impossible not to come home with massive gains.

My Gains

I could go on for hours, so I’m going to limit myself to 5 incredible gifts of VO Atlanta 2025.

  1. Insight: I’ve been a voice actor for over 20 years now, and I am still learning about the inner workings of the business. For example, this year I learned more about the different opportunities that are afforded a voice actor who is on an elite LA/NY VO roster. I learned important information about the prolific Commercial voicecasting agency (Voicecasters) casting process. This info will affect how I audition for their projects in the future. And the list goes on and on. Not to mention, that the business is constantly changing…so just when you might think you have a full grasp on how it works? It evolves once again.
  2. Connections: Once again I walked away from the conference with a multitude of new business connections. From the direct email address of the fabulous Denise Patierno (in charge of VO casting for CNN promo department) to being added to the direct roster of a prevalent Casting Director, to learning the name of a large Automotive advertising company, I have not doubt that the connections I made this year will continue to serve me throughout my career.
  3. Relationships: This business can be a lonely one. We are working all day, by ourselves, in padded rooms. The value of connecting with others who completely understand what my daily life is like cannot be understated. It feels amazing to know that I have a pretty sizable group of voice actors that I feel comfortable reaching out to should I have a question or simply need commiseration. Mental health affects productivity (among many other things) and having trusted friends in the same business is a huge boost to my mental health.
  4. Perspective: Meeting all of these colleagues and learning all of this information in a short amount of time immediately adjusts my perspective on my career as a whole. I found that it was a reality check that was both positive and negative. On the plus side, I left inspired and the experience reaffirmed my belief that no dream is too big and nothing is really off limits as long as I keep working towards it. On the other hand, I was reminded that achievements often take many, many years, a whole lot of frustration, and the feeling that you are scratching and clawing your way to your dreams. I was also reminded about the fact that there are SO many wonderful, talented voice actors out there who are competing for the same jobs. Again, this is good and bad. On one hand, it’s a whole lot of competition making each job statistically unlikely. On the other hand, it’s a good reminder not to take it personally when I don’t land a job.
  5. Belonging: Finally, I left with a deeper sense that I am in the right place. I reaffirmed that fact that I love this business with all of my heart and I deeply enjoy the other people who are part of the voice over industry. It is creative industry full of funny, open-minded, generous, and warm people. I am so lucky to be a part of it and it is true gift to feel like I belong there.

One thing I do wish I had done was take more pictures! But I will include one that was sent to me from Saturday night (after a great dinner with Harry Dunn, Andy Barnett, Imari Williams, and Libby Clearfield).

I have no doubt that this will not be my last VO Atlanta conference. Until then, I return to y booth with renewed inspiration and a fuller heart. ♥️

New and old friends!

Voice Actor Genevieve Baer is a Reed Award Finalist!

February 21, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Reed Award Nomination for Voice Over!

I am so delighted to announce that I have been named a Reed Award finalist for 2024!

I submitted work in the category for Best Political Attack Ad and was thrilled to learn that my submission received a nomination. The nominated commercial is political ad against Congresswoman Marionette Miller-Meeks (Iowa)–highlighting her extreme views on abortion rights.

Best Political Attack Ad Nomination

You can watch my nominated political commercial HERE

Political Voice Over Work

I was lucky enough to do a lot of political voice over work in 2024. I absolutely love doing it. I thrive on the fast pace and the variety of deliveries the work calls for. I love the urgent nature of it. And I love the feeling that my voice over skills might actually be making a positive difference in our country.

Why this Particular Political Ad?

I chose this particular commercial because I felt like my voice over delivery struck the right balance of “real person” and authenticity while conveying the frustration and urgency at the same time. I’m so happy the judges agreed!

The Reed Awards and Conference

The Reed Awards is produced by Campaigns & Elections, the journal of the political campaign industry. “Founded in 1980, C&E is the go-to resource for political consultants, with its focus on the latest tools, tactics, techniques, technologies & strategies in campaigns.”

Branding itself as “The Political Campaign Industry Event of the Year” the event consists of two days of the very best political campaign professionals from across the world converging in one city for the Reed Awards & Conference. It’s an opportunity to connect, creat new relationships, dive into key issues affecting the industry, and celebrate the best campaign work from the preceding year.

Future Goals

I am unable to attend the ceremony this year as I have already committed to attending the VO Atlanta Conference happening on the same weekend. My goal is to continue to have my work recognized in years to come and attend The Reed Conference in the very near future!

My Most LOVED Voice Over Clients

February 8, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

I Love my Job and Appreciate All my Clients

And that cannot be understated. Even after 20 years, I am in awe of just how much I adore being a voice actor. I love it so much. I love the variety that every day brings. I love being creative every day. I love using my acting training and getting into character. I love working from home. I love the fact that the sky is the limit and there are always new goals to strive for and new voice over genres to tackle.

People often ask me who my favorite clients are. I think the answer surprises them. They assume that I am going to name the client that pays the most or who provides the voice over jobs that are the highest profile.

But being a fantastic voice over client is a lot more nuanced than that.

Sending Love to My Voice over Clients!

Or so the Hallmark holiday says. And in honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would share a few of the things that my MOST LOVED CLIENTS do that make me appreciate them immensely.

•They are Great Communicators

My favorite clients communicate with me. Clearly and effectively. They help me help them by telling me exactly what they want…without me even having to ask. If they have time, tone, file format or any other specific needs, they LET ME KNOW. This results in me being able to get them their audio files quickly and to provide them exactly what they want the first time around.

They also just communicate with me in general. You have no idea how much I appreciate a quick reply back saying “file received!” or “submitted your invoice to accounting”. I care deeply that my clients are satisfied. When I don’t hear from them, I worry that the file somehow didn’t reach them. And yet, I don’t want to bother them with excess emails.

A super quick email confirmation eliminates all that headache.

And ditto with the invoice confirmation. Look, I love my job but I also want to get paid for it. I really love those clients that keep me posted in regards to receiving and submitting my invoices.

•Don’t Make Me Chase Payments

And while we’re on the subject of payment…I have massive love and appreciation for the clients that just make getting paid SIMPLE and HASSLE-FREE.

I have quite a few clients that I completely trust and really don’t have to think about in regards to payment other than submitting my invoices to them. I know that they will pay me within a certain period of time without my having to follow up.

Others, not so much.

Chasing down payments and sending follow-up emails feels like a whole additional job that I really never asked for. It’s so important to me that I fulfill my clients needs quickly and to full satisfaction. If they need a file within the hour? I make it happen. I only ask that my need to get paid without extra hassle would be prioritized as well.

And I LOVE the clients who respect that need.

• They Express Appreciation

I care. I care a lot. And I think that is one of the things that has increased my success in the voice over industry. That care comes through in my work and my business conduct.

You have no idea how far a simple “thank you” goes.

Of course, I will do just as good a job for you whether you express gratitude or not. But a simple thank you and expression of appreciation fills me with the warm and fuzzies.

It feels good to know that my work is acknowledged and appreciated!

My favorite clients go out of their way to recognize how hard I work for them and let me know that they appreciate it. Their notes of gratitude truly make my day.

•They Provide Proper Phonetics

Oh boy, this could be an entire blog post in itself. Please understand, I want to make you happy. I WANT to nail all of your desires and wishes for your voice over project and I want to do it as efficiently as possible.

My favorite voice over clients provide proper phonetics for ANY and ALL questionable words in their voice over copy.

We’re not just talking about technical or medical terms. There are names of towns that only locals know how to say. There are names of individuals that are not easy to decipher. Local store names, foreign names, etc. When in doubt? Provide a phonetic.

And not just a badly written phonetic. A proper phonetic that includes WHICH syllable gets the emphasis. You would be surprised how often that is missed. For added bonus points, add a reference link or a “rhymes with…” to the note.

I have many clients who will slow down the process by making me ask for phonetics (that are not easily looked up on Youtube) or their phonetics are so poorly written out when provided that they are useless. This just slows down the process.

My favorite clients take the guesswork out of the equation for me. They automatically provide the phonetics in a proper and detailed manner.

Grateful Beyond Words

I hope this list was helpful and enlightening to all of the commercial producers, video producers, instructional designers, promo producers, etc. who interact with me and other voice over artists on a regular basis.

This month of love, and all other months, I see you. I appreciate you. I LOVE you!

What to do when NOT recording Voice overs?

February 4, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

So you’re a voice actor and you’ve found yourself with a few moments when you have no voice over projects or auditions in your inbox. GREAT! Time to take a nap or watch some TV right?

Wrong.

Although building downtime into your overall schedule is important for your physical and mental health, there are always things you can be going to increase your VO skills and booking rates.

Here are a few important things all voice actors should be doing when they’re not recording:

1) Work on Your Craft

A great voice actor is always training and honing their skills or working on new ones. So when you find yourself with time on your hands, that is a great opportunity to:

•Train privately with a new voice over coach

•Coach in a new voice over genre that you haven’t tackled yet

•Attend group voice over “work outs” or group lessons with fellow voice over colleagues

2) Market Your Voice Over Services

Finding potential voice over clients and marketing to those leads takes time. I will often have an on-going list of potential clients to reach out to. When I find myself with a few minutes, I might tackle a handful of them until the next voice over project comes in.

Some potential people/groups to reach out to are:

•Creative Agencies

•Audio Production Houses

•Voice over casting directors

•Past clients that you haven’t heard from in a while

•There are so many more from web video producers to instructional designers, etc.

3) Work on your Voice over Website

Having a professional website is crucial in this business of voice acting. And–if built properly–you may even find yourself getting voice over gigs simply through a client finding you on Google.

I personally still have a lot to learn about SEO and it’s complicated and constantly-evolving nature.

When I am not recording a voice over job in my home studio, I am still sitting in my Whisper room working on this very website! I have a massive to-do list which includes building out many more niche voice over categories in addition to the larger Commercial voice over, TV Promo Voice over, Voice over narration, Radio Imaging, etc.

4) Listen to Voice Over Podcasts

I have actually been shocked at the amount of knowledge and inspiration I have picked up from various voice over podcasts! So many guests drop priceless nuggets of wisdom throughout these conversations–from equipment to lead-finding to self-marketing.

I’ve also been inspired to work with various voice over coaches just from hearing them speak in these conversations.

I almost always finish a podcast inspired to take action in some area of my career.

5) Listen to more Voice overs

Now would be a great time to go to the website of en elite voice over agency or perhaps a voice actor whose career you admire and listen to their work. You can learn so much about current voice over trends and what kinds of deliveries are booking.

Even when you settle down in front of the television, it’s important to listen to those commercials. I personally find it particularly fascinating when I hear a commercial come on that I auditioned for. I learn so much from hearing the voice that booked and how the final spot came out.

Find Balance

In the end (like everything in life), it’s about finding balance. It can’t be ALL work ALL the time or you will burn out. But hopefully this gave you some ideas and a bit of motivation to tackle some items on that “Business of Voice over” checklist.

I look at it this way. I honestly think I have the best job in the entire world. If I can do anything at all that helps keep the work coming and my career going? Then I am all in.

A couple weeks ago, I took some time in

between gigs to order some new gear–

including these pretty aqua headphones!

A Voice Actor Embraces Herself and Finds Her Funny

January 10, 2025 by GenevieveBaer

Women are Allowed to Take Up Space

Confession: it took me developing a very serious and dangerous eating disorder in my junior year of college to discover that I have a knack for comedy.

As women, we are fed the message from a very young age that we should not take up too much space in this world. I mean that literally and figuratively. Watch your figure; do not be too needy, too emotional, too sexual, too loud, or (god forbid) too angry. This is taught to us directly and through millions of indirect messages all around us.

Dangerous Messages

And should your break these rules, you will be labeled as unattractive, over-bearing, shrill, slutty, hysterical, and—my personal nightmare—“too much”. It’s a highly effective way of shaming women and shutting them up and it’s employed by men and women alike.

I have been a very emotional, expressive, and sensual person from the moment I was born. And I began receiving the message that I should be ashamed of those traits for as long as I can remember. My parents certainly loved me and I don’t blame them entirely. The messages came from everywhere (including my parents) and my folks were simply following the rules they had been taught.

But those messages landed. And they confused me. And they hurt terribly.

Elementary School

When I was in elementary school, my parents brought me to a therapist to deal with my “anger problem”. I had a tendency to throw epic temper tantrums when I was upset—usually about a rule that didn’t make sense to me.

The irony of this? My parents fought and screamed at each other constantly. I mean screamed. I have countless memories of my mother throwing things like a pile of newspapers, or—in one particularly “sweet” fight—an entire pineapple upside down cake at my father (and no, that did not cause the upside-down cake to magically land right-side up but instead, we found pieces of cake in our cabinets for weeks afterwards).

So, you see, the only example I had of anger “management” was to throw a temper tantrum. Is it any wonder that I was doing the same?

Body Image

And then there were the body messages.

I have a crystal clear memory from when I was around 10 years old. My grandparents were visiting and my mom set out some bean dip and tortilla chips. When told I could have some, I happily sat at the counter and dug in.

From across the family room, my grandfather smirked and said “Oh, she’s in heaven!”.

I felt instant shame.

Oh sure, if anyone had confronted my grandfather he would’ve widened his eyes in innocence and said “What? I was just remarking that she looked happy!”.

But I knew. I was only 10 and I knew that I should be ashamed of myself. How dare I dig in like that? How dare I indulge? I felt ugly. Messy. Fat. Shameful.

At first that shame was heavily reinforced by my parents who put me on my first diet when I was 11. But it didn’t take long for a smart girl like me to digest the amount of positive attention and praise I received when my body was stick-thin and take over the duty of body control as my own personal obsession.

I feel so sad for the girl that I was back then. How much further in my emotional maturity could I have gotten if my brain hadn’t been entirely taken up by thoughts of dieting? What kind of creative endeavors could I have achieved? Would I have chosen different friendships and romantic relationships had I been been instilled with a sense of self-love?

I’ve read that those who suffered from eating disorders in their youth tend to be behind in their maturity. I mean..duh! All of those years with this one major focus that kept me stuck in a shame spiral. I think it took me years to undo that damage and honestly, it will never fully be gone. It’s gotten easier, but I was always have to talk back to those insidious voices that creep in for the rest of my life.

College Years

My junior year of college, my eating disorder reached a new level. I had stopped menstruating and would carry a scale to the dorm bathroom every morning to weigh myself (because I had deemed the low-pile carpet in our dorm room as too “unreliable”). I ate a very specific and pathetically low-cal diet every day and became addicted to chewing sugar-free gum while pouring packets of equal in my mouth to “extend the flavor”. I was a mess.

It was during that time that I was cast as a “clown” in our musical theatre department’s original musical about (you guessed it) various types of clowns.

Up until then, I had thought of myself as an ingenue and always went out for those roles. But you know what? Inhabiting this very tiny body finally allowed me permission to be BIG in other ways. I took up very little physical space, so it was okay in my mind to take up space in a different way. To contort my body and face and possibly look silly or ugly. To take risks. I was free to “chew the scenery” because lord knows I wasn’t chewing much else.

A Revelation

And guess what? I realized that I was friggin funny! I had a real ability to make people laugh. I had been striving to be the ingenue when, in reality, I was the quirky friend, the comic relief, the sidekick, the witty or sarcastic character that brought the humor. And I loved playing these parts. They were so interesting and fun and I loved the side of myself that could inhabit them.

How sad that it took my almost physically disappearing for my funny side to emerge. But I can’t regret it. Because that was crucial knowledge that I gained and proceeded to carry with me into the rest of my life and career.

Not Much Has Changed

Those damaging messages that are sent to women have not gone away. They’re not hard to find. On TV, in stores, and in our personal relationships. And women that dare to live out loud are still demonized by many (and adored by others). BUT there are also more dissenting voices than there were 40 years ago. Powerful voices that assure women that they are ALLOWED TO TAKE UP SPACE.

And this is the message that I want to continue to embrace and spread to other women. You do not need to apologize for existing. For feeling. For asking for a refill at a restaurant. For the fact that someone else bumped into you. For asking for a raise. There is nothing shameful about being emotional, for feeling angry, or for (gasp!) enjoying a damn meal.

If someone tries to shame you for those things then that is their problem and not yours.

Let’s say it again: YOU ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE UP SPACE.

Tell yourself this. Tell your friends. Tell your daughters. You can feed yourself AND be funny at the same time. And surround yourself with others that do the same. My wish for you is that it doesn’t take a serious eating disorder and years of suffering to get to this place. Learn from my mistakes and give yourself permission to live out loud. This life is all we’ve got. Ask for what you want without apology. Eat the bean dip with gusto.

Today

Today, my body is strong and healthy. I make my living as a successful voice actor (yup, I said successful and resisted the urge to be self-deprecating about it). I work from home, run my own business, and am the breadwinner in our household. I love my career SO much and I use my emotional and expressive side every single day to make a darn good living. I am ambitious and driven and out-going and bawdy and I am not afraid to show it.

And also? I’m really f*cking funny.

1996 in the Syracuse University’s production of “Clowns”. Starving…but very funny.

Tips and Advice for Attending Voiceover Conferences

September 8, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Thinking about attending a Voiceover Conference?

From VOAtlanta to Vocation to OneVoice, SOVAS, MAVO…there are a lot of them out there! But…are they worth it? Should you go if you’re a total newbie? A long-time working pro? Well, there are a whole lot of opinions out there when you ask those questions. I happen to live by “to each his or her own” and I don’t think there is one right answer. But I did want to share my own unique perspective in case it helps someone get a more positive conference experience.

My First Voiceover Conference

In 2023–after almost 20 years as a working voice actor–I FINALLY attended my first voiceover conference. Why did it take me so long? Well, that’s a long answer for another day. 😜 All I can say is that I wish I had done it sooner. I got back from conference #3 less than a month ago. I have gained so much from each one…from valuable knowledge to blossoming friendships. 💕

Each time, I’ve gotten a little bit better about how best to approach these things without getting completely burnt out or overwhelmed. I thought I would pass along those tips for anyone thinking of attending their first conference in the future. So, without further ado…here is one random voice actor’s….

DO’s and DON’Ts of VOICEOVER CONFERENCES!

✅ Do: KNOW YOUR LIMITS –  These things are not for everyone–and that’s ok! There are plenty of other ways to learn and network. Find the ones that are right for you.

❌ Don’t: KNOCK IT UNTIL YOU TRY IT – Give it a try before you rule them out. I was shocked at just how much I got out of each one.

✅ Do: TREAT YOURSELF KINDLY – Speak positively to yourself and use that inner voice to build yourself up. That confidence will project outward and draw people to you.

❌Don’t: BEAT YOURSELF UP – I get it. I can be hard on myself too. But please remind yourself that we are all at different places in our journey and you are okay…wherever you are.

✅ Do: PROTECT YOUR VOICE – Conferences involve a whole lot of talking and often in loud settings. Take breaks, drink plenty of water, and take care of that “money-maker”!

❌Don’t: OVER SCHEDULE YOURSELF – While it’s important to take advantage of the learning opportunities offered, remember that down time (and time to connect with colleagues) is also crucial.

✅ Do: PACK SNACKS AND LAYERS – I learned this one the hard way. Conferences tend to take place in hotels–where the temperature varies wildly and the food is expensive!

❌ Don’t: BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR – I’m not saying that anyone is being purposely deceitful. What I mean is that, we all have our own perspectives but often tend to present them as if they are absolutes. Remember that it’s valuable to listen to many people’s thoughts and ideas and decide which ones resonate with you. There is no ONE way to go about this career.

✅ ❌ DO or DON’T: BRING A TRAVEL RIG: Speaking of doing what is right for you…this very much applies to the whole travel rig question. Many voice actors travel with them and many don’t. This is completely up to you and where you are in your career, whether you want to just be in “conference-mode”, etc.

Say Hello!

I hope these suggestions were helpful. If you have any questions, feel free to email me and I’d be happy to help. And if you DO see me at a conference, please come and say hello!

Voice Actor Genevieve Baer Wins 2024 One Voice Award!

August 14, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

A Voiceover Win!

Wow.

My head is still spinning from the amazing weekend at the One Voice conference and Awards Ceremony.  I was absolutely shocked to hear my name called as the winner for Best Political Demo! That room was full of the best of the best of this industry. As I said in my speech…just to be able to consider myself a colleague amongst these giants is so amazing. To be honored with an award is a complete dream come true.

Acceptance Speech

Everyone kept their speeches short and sweet–which was much appreciated as we had a ton of awards to get through! As you’ll hear in my own acceptance speech (which you can watch below), they played the first portion of my Democratic Political Demo as I walked up on stage.

I am so happy that they did.  This spot (written and produced by J. Michael Collins) represents my belief systems in a nutshell and I believe that you can hear that in my delivery. I am so proud to have had that spot in particular represent me as I took the stage.  It’s wonderful timing to win an award for this particular genre…as we are obviously in an intense election year and Political advertising is exploding!

I have already had the honor to voice Political commercials promoting women’s right to choose. My hope is that I can do so much more to promote abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, gun control advocacy, and other policies and politicians that promote love and acceptance while protecting body autonomy and promoting equal rights.

My Acceptance Speech

One Voice

The One Voice Awards are the only voice-over awards that don’t charge an entry fee for submissions; as a result, they receive thousands of entries. We were told that for 2024, they received around 5000 entries that a group of 19 judges voted on (blindly to keep them objective).

Categories included best TV commercial, best radio commercial, best corporate narration, automotive spot, TV promo, animation, best voiceover demos in many of the genres, voice-over artists of the year, and more. The talent in that room was mind-blowing. These were artists at the very top of their game with careers that cover every genre and every high-profile voice-over gig one could possibly think of.

It was so uplifting and inspiring to be surrounded and uplifted by this voiceover community. The skill and talent in the room was only surpassed by the support and goodwill of the community. It was the such an incredibly lovely and positive atmosphere.

The One Voice Conference

But of course the weekend was not only about the awards themselves. There was a plethora of VO industry panels, workshops, and other learning opportunities. I had the pleasure of attending small-group workshops hosted by Sumeet Iyengar of Cope Management and Arielle Negrin of Atlas Talent on commercial voiceover, movie trailer voiceovers, and promo vo.

Both workshops were wonderful and filled with valuable nuggets of wisdom from VO industry pros. We all had a chance to step up to the mic multiple times, receive feedback, and improve our reads. Having attended similar workshops online and in person…I highly recommend attending in-person learning opportunities. While I learn from both formats, there is something about being in the same room that simply cannot be beat.

The Takeaway

It’s hard to sum up all of my feelings about this incredible honor and weekend in general. I will say this: it has not been easy forcing myself out of the comfort of my cozy recording booth and putting myself “out there”. But it has been oh so very worth it. Each conference and in-person networking event I have attended has fueled my knowledge and motivation in countless ways.

The VO community is warm and joyful and I feel incredibly proud to belong to this amazing group of people. This award is the cherry on top of the this gift of a career that is beyond my wildest dreams.

Two Nominations for Voice Actor Genevieve Baer!

August 5, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Voice over Award Nominations

This year was the first time I submitted for the One Voice Awards and I was extremely pleased to receive not one, but TWO nominations! The One Voice Awards are the only voiceover industry awards that do not charge an entry fee; as a result, they get far more entries than any other competition.

I had the honor of being nominated in the category of “Best Political Demo” and “Best Political Commercial Voiceover”. You can hear my demo HERE and the Commercial Spot I was nominated for HERE.  I am blown away by the recognition and honored to be listed amongst some of the best voice actors in the industry.

Awards Ceremony on August 10, 2024

The Awards will be presented in Dallas on Saturday evening 8/10/24 and will include a red carpet type photo op followed by a 3 course dinner and ceremony. I have been dreaming of  a little red carpet moment since I was a little girl and posted this picture on Linkedin as proof that I have been practicing for quite some time.  The fabulous Kay Bess will be the emcee for the evening.

One Voice Dallas Conference

But of course, One Voice is not just an awards ceremony. It’s also a fabulous conference for the voiceover industry with a ton of learning and network opportunities packed into the weekend.  I am really looking forward to connecting to so many of my VO colleagues as well as various casting directors, agents, and other industry experts. I have signed up for a few workshops led by casting director Elaine Clark, Sumeet Iyengar of Cope Management, and Arielle Negrin of Atlas Talent.

Each time I attend a workshop like this, I always walk away with priceless knowledge and insight into the business and new tactics and tools to apply to my reads.

My Goals

My intentions for the weekend are to simply soak it up, be as present as possible, connect with people I have not met before, gain new knowledge, and stay healthy! It’s a long list for two days for sure.

Once I have recovered from all of the fun, I will be sure to post a new blog detailing the weekend.  Check back soon for pictures and a recap of my experience!

Advice for Becoming a Professional Voice Actor

July 3, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

A Professional Voice Actor’s Most Common Request

Can I pick your brain???

That’s usually how the message starts out. It seems like every other week there is someone reaching out who wants to “pick my brain” about getting into the voiceover industry. And hey, I don’t fault them in the least! After all, I love this work with a passion.

But I do find myself answering a lot of the same questions and I figured it was high time to make a list of sorts to have at the ready for when the next VO hopeful comes calling.

My Voiceover Advice for New Talents

For the last couple of weeks, I released my top tips for hopeful voice actors on my Linkedin page which you can access here. I figured I would go ahead and publish them here as well. I hope this is helpful.  Some of the tips are geared toward those who are totally new while others will be helpful for voice talent who have a little experience under their belt.  Keep in mind, I started my voiceover journey over 20 years ago…so “breaking in” to the VO industry looked very different back then. My path undoubtedly differs from those who began more recently.

Regardless, here are a few tips:

Genevieve Baer’s Top Voiceover Tips

1️⃣ The sound of your voice is really not important. So many people look into VO because they’ve been told they have a great voice. And many voice actors do have gorgeous voices…but that’s not a necessity nor is it going to open many doors for you.

Today more than ever, the VO industry is focusing on “real” and “authentic”. So an every day–not particularly remarkable voice–is just fine if the delivery is relatable. Far more important are the following: acting ability, great reading skills, determination, resilience, drive, worth ethic, and patience.

2️⃣ There is no quick way to break into the voiceacting. If you are really determined to break into the industry, expect to put in considerable time and cost. This includes training (your FIRST step) with a reputable teacher(s), purchasing home studio equipment, paying for professionally produced demos, perhaps joining a fee-based online casting site, creating a website and other marketing materials, and the list goes on and on.

3️⃣ Please note, however, that not all of these costs need to come at once. In fact, they shouldn’t! As I mentioned, your first step is to train. This can be done in a group setting, one-on-one, in-person, or virtually. Take the time to properly vet the various coaches out there.

Also remember that not every coach will be right for you. Find one who you vibe with & maybe don’t stop with just one. Before you make any demos, make sure that multiple, trusted folks have told you that you’re ready. If you make a demo before you’re ready, you will be doing yourself a disservice and wasting your money.

4️⃣ Be a sponge. While you’re training, soak up as much knowledge as you can from other sources. There are literally a kajillion podcasts and facebook groups devoted to voiceover. Listen, read, and learn! Before asking a question on a FB group, please do a search to see if that question has been answered before.

Take in everything…but take it in with a grain of salt. There are of course egos and opinions to wade through. But there are also tremendously talented, and generous people out there willing to share their knowledge.

5️⃣ Don’t try to cut corners. While you don’t have to start out with the most expensive equipment, you do need to invest in quality. You will at least need a decently treated space to record in, a good VO mic, an audio interface, and recording software. If you try and get by without any of that your audio will not sound good enough to make the cut. And trust me, people can tell.

There’s so much information out there and many experts ready to help. For example, the folks at Sweetwater will be more than happy to hop on the phone and advise you about a decent starter package.

6️⃣ This leads me to the next tip which is: learn from the experts. From how to use your recording software, to dialing in your studio sound and various plugins, to training in specific genres, to how best to market yourself…there are experts and info galore out there. Some of that knowledge is free for the taking (again podcasts, youtube vids, etc.) and some will cost you money. It’s worth it.

7️⃣ At the same time? Do your own homework. While there are people out there ready and willing to help…please don’t expect everyone to hold your hand and do the work for you. Do your own research. Study and practice. Respect people’s time when you reach out for help.

8️⃣ Work ethic, attitude, and hustle are everything. This industry is saturated with talented people. If there are multiple people great for the job but one of them radiates gratitude, positivity, and efficiency…well, the choice is easy.

Be human, be humble, be responsive, and don’t forget how gosh-darn lucky we are to be in this business.

Some other things to consider

-Work on your cardiovascular health. Being a great voice actor takes a lot of core strength and breath control. Bike, hike, swim, or take a tip from Taylor Swift and sing while you’re on the treadmill!

-If you haven’t already, take an acting class and/or get involved in theatre. Voice acting is ACTING and you will be required to convey every emotion and scenario with your voice as the only tool. Develop those skills.

-Read out loud. A lot.

-Pay attention to commercial spots as you’re watching TV.

-Listen to yourself as you converse with your loved ones. As the fabulous and wise Tina Morasco would say (paraphrasing here!): pay attention to how you talk to your partner in the morning while you’re having coffee. That is the real you. The you that is grounded and only speaks in order to convey necessary information. Try bringing that same “you” to your VO copy.

I hope that these tips have been helpful! I understand why there are so many people out there curious about the world of voiceover. It’s not easy but it’s Oh. So. Good. 🎙️🙏 ♥️

Voice Actor Genevieve Baer is the Voice of THE NPC for Waze!

June 12, 2024 by GenevieveBaer

Genevieve Voices The NPC for the Waze Navigation App!

Okay, I’ll admit it. My teenagers had to teach me what exactly an NPC is. 😂  HERE is a longer explanation from Wikipedia but–in short–it stands for “Non Playable Character“.  So any character in a video game that is controlled by the computer and not by a player would be an NPC.

Although I didn’t quite understand the term at first, I did understand the concept. After a great first audition and call-back, I was thrilled to be cast as the custom navigation voice of the NPC for the Waze App.

Click HERE to hear brief sample of my NPC Character

Customize your Drive

Waze has a cool feature where you can “customize” your drive by choosing the character or voice who narrates your directions. These characters vary greatly in tone and mood and there are even some celebrities who have lent their voices (Christina Aguilera and Cody Rigsby to name a couple). My NPC character has a very calm, wise, and soothing tone while imbibing her directions with a bit of dry wit.  I got to work with Hyperbolic Audio for the first time and our session was a total blast.

Give it a Try!

Would like to give a try? It’s really simple. Download the Waze app on your phone. On the top left, click on those menu lines and go to “customize your drive”.  Scroll through the characters.  Right now the NPC character is located in the category of “Encouraging”.  I’ve already had people sending me messages telling me how much they’re enjoying it. My brother was a little wary of being “bossed around” by his little sister on his drives though.🤣😂

Thank you

If you do try it, do let me know what you think!  And many thanks as always to my fabulous agents at ASPVO for the opportunity!🚙🎙️🙏
