Providing Vocals for Children’s Music
A recent post on Linkedin led me down a new career path that happens to fit me like a glove!
As a trained singer with a background in Musical Theatre and Children’s Theatre, I have always relished the opportunity to sing for the occasional voice over job. A couple weeks ago, I happened to see a last-minute, urgent casting on Linkedin searching for a female adult singer for a kid’s music video and jumped at the chance to audition.
After connecting with the composer (who was also casting the project), I learned she would soon be teaching a workshop on auditioning for Kids’ media. I signed up right away–eager to learn if I was giving myself the best chance to score the job by using the proper protocol.
Submitting Vocal Auditions for Kids’ Media
I learned so much from the workshop including including the following:
- The proper way to record vocals and the proper format to submit
- What composers and casting directors need in an audition that makes your audition viable
- How to adjust my vocals to best serve music for children
- Where to search for this type of work
- How and where to make a demo to use as my “calling card” for the Kids’ Media Genre
Children’s Music is a Whole New World
One of the most eye-opening revelations from the workshop was that this type of work does NOT come through voiceover agents or the voiceover world in general. In fact, I was told that most singers are cast directly through various rosters and agents are really not part of the equation. 🤯
I do get the occasional audition from my agents that requires singing (and I get SO excited when they come around) but I have always wondered how the vast majority is cast.
I also learned just how much work is out there on channel after channel on Youtube that my voice and skill-set would be perfect for.
Creating a Singing Demo for Kids’ Media
Honestly, I didn’t even wait for the workshop to be over before I emailed the woman teaching it to ask her to help me create a demo. I was so impressed with her career and knowledge as well as the previous demos she had created and I couldn’t wait to get started.
We met on zoom before hand to discuss my vocal range and interests and the process raced on from there. I had an absolute blast recording lead, harmony, and vocals on original songs tailored to me. I found the whole process exhilarating.
I am absolutely thrilled with how my vocal demo came out and am so excited to pursue more work in the Children’s Entertainment area.
Take a Listen!
Here is my shiny new Kids’ Media Vocal demo. I hope to be announcing tons of fun singing projects in the future! 🎤 🎶
